Meet the Doctors

Pediatric Dentist Joy Phelps, DMD, MS

Phelps Family-1044Dr. Joy Phelps was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and raised in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and then completed her undergraduate education at North Carolina State University. After graduating summa cum laude with a degree in Biological Sciences, she attended the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. While a dental student she completed rotations in community health dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and pediatric dentistry. Her passion for providing children a happy dental experience prompted her to return to Virginia for her two year postdoctoral residency in pediatric dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University where she also earned a Master’s of Science Degree. Dr. Phelps has practiced pediatric dentistry for 15 years.

Dr. Phelps is a board certified Pediatric Dentist.  She earned the designation of a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and received the honor of being awarded the Richard C. Pugh Award for scoring in the top 3% of all candidates nationwide who took the written pediatric dental certification examination. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the Virginia Dental Association, the Richmond Dental Society, the Old Dominion Dental Society and Peter B. Ramsey Dental Society.  

Dr. Phelps has four children. In her free time, she enjoys reading, outdoor activities, Zumba, and spending time with family.

                                                            

                                                                     

Pediatric Dentist  Ellen Alpano DDS
Dr. Ellen received her undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland. In 2005, she completed her dental degree at Columbia University School of Dental Medicine. After graduation, she served as a dentist with the Indian Health Service in Arizona.  In 2009, she returned to her home state of Maryland and completed her pediatric dental residency at the University of Maryland, where she earned the award of Chief Resident.
Dr. Ellen is a board-certified Pediatric Dentist and has been in practice since 2009 in Maryland, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Dr. Ellen lives locally with her husband and two children and is an avid “foodie” who seeks out authentic international food.
